At a glance

“A Journey through Deep Learning” is an intensive 40 hours PhD-level school that offers a comprehensive exploration of Deep Learning principles and applications. Organized by the MaLGa Center, this program combines methodological aspects with practical insights into modern frameworks and architectures”. JDL25 is open to students, postdocs, faculty members and professionals, upon selection.
The school will take place exclusively in person, it will not be streamed online. Attendees will receive an attendance certificate reporting the number of hours they actually attended. Please note no scholarship is available to cover travel costs.

This course provides participants with both foundational knowledge and insights into cutting-edge developments.
Key features include:
• Fundamental principles of DL, including dense and convolutional networks.
• Advanced topics like transformers, and generative models.
• Exploration of practical challenges such as dataset bias and data scarcity.
• Poster sessions to foster collaboration and discussions.
Participants will also work on a group project to consolidate their learning and will be evaluated based on this final project.

The course unfolds over five days, starting with foundational concepts in machine learning and dense neural networks. It progresses to convolutional neural networks and their applications, before diving into sequential data processing using recurrent models and transformers. Advanced topics, including generative models and strategies to address challenges like dataset bias and data scarcity, are covered on the fourth day. The final day is dedicated to a collaborative group project, allowing participants to apply the knowledge gained throughout the course.

Attendees should have prior knowledge of linear algebra, probability, calculus, basic of machine learning and programming skills (familiarity with Python is an asset).

Logistics

The course will take place at MaLGa Center, hosted within the DIBRIS/DIMA building at the University of Genoa: Via Dodecaneso 35, 16146 Genoa, Italy.

The course will be held in the DIBRIS Department building of Via Dodecaneso 35, Genova. Indications to the classroom will be visible at the entrance. You will have access to vending machines during the breaks betweein classes. You can bring your own laptop, but please keep into consideration that, due to the number of expected participants, your battery should be fully charged.

We will have a 1.5-hour lunch break every day: although there is a bar close to the department, you are encouraged to bring your own lunch and enjoy the break with your peers. There are common areas just out of the classroom where you will be able to sit and have lunch.

Students will need to arrange their own accommodation.

Speakers & instructors

Classes will be held by MaLGa Center faculty members from UniGe’s DIBRIS Department, with the support of MaLGa researchers.

Programme

The course spans 40 hours and is equivalent to two modules: Introduction to Deep Learning (Days 1-2) and Advanced Deep Learning (Days 3-4). Day 5 is dedicated to a group project and the final assessment.
