The event is supported by the University of Genoa through the Departments of Informatics, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering (DIBRIS), Mathematics (DIMA), and hosted in the spaces of the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD), with the institutional support of UniGe.

At a glance

From the early days of computational vision in the ’80s to breakthroughs in statistical learning and data-driven intelligence, the field of AI has undergone profound transformations.

Seeing, Learning, Evolving brings together colleagues, collaborators, and former students to celebrate the scientific journey of Alessandro Verri, whose work has played a pivotal role in advancing the theoretical and computational foundations of vision and learning, fostering a culture of curiosity, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary innovation.

The event will explore the evolution of ideas at the intersection of perception, inference, and representation from pattern recognition to machine learning to AI. It will also reflect on how these ideas have co-evolved with broader scientific and technological paradigms.

We believe that this gathering will be both a celebration of a remarkable career and a forward-looking dialogue on the future of computational science.

Logistics

The event will take place at the Department of Architecture and Design. For more details, check the Programme and the Venue sections.

The event will take place at the Department of Architecture and Design (DAD), in Stradone di Sant’Agostino All lectures will take place in Aula Benvenuto. Refreshments will be served in the nearby cloister.

By Air: Fly into Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport and take a taxi or local bus to the city center. The next best option is to arrive in Milan Malpensa or Milan Linate and take a direct train to Genova from Milan Central Station.\r
By Train: Direct trains from major Italian and European cities are available and will get you to Genova in no time.\r
By Bus: Regular intercity bus services connect Genova with other Italian and European cities.

Speakers

Annalisa Barla, Ernesto De Vito, Alberto Diaspro, Patrizio Frosini, Andrea Fusiello, Federico Girosi, Francesca Odone, Massimiliano Pittore, Tomaso Poggio, Lorenzo Rosasco, Paolo Solinas, Vincent Torre, and Manuel Trucco will reflect not only on the science they’ve helped shape, but on the shared curiosity and friendship that have fueled a lifetime of seeing, learning, and evolving.

Programme

The program unfolds over two days, with talks distributed across three sessions. The speakers are long-time collaborators and friends of Alessandro Verri, scientists whose work has left a deep mark on computational vision, machine learning, and beyond.
