MaLGa Lecture: Alfio Quarteroni, La matematica fra modelli fisici e IA

20/04/2023

Alfio Quarteroni - [Guancia Camicia Camicia elegante]

MaLGa Center is honoured to announce that Prof. Alfio Quarteroni will be our guest on May 26th, and you are all invited to attend his Lectio Magistralis titled "Mathematics between Physical Models and Artificial Intelligence". The event is open to the public (but registration is mandatory at the link below), and will be held in Via Balbi 5, Aula Magna. Please note that the talk will be given in Italian.

At the end of the event, all participants will have the opportunity to meet with MaLGa researchers and the speaker during refreshments.

Abstract

For years, mathematics has played a fundamental role in understanding the vital processes of our body. In addition to quantifying its physiology, mathematics helps to improve therapeutic approaches and, sometimes, even to suggest more targeted surgical interventions. In this speech I will make particular reference to the human cardio-circulatory system, to the analysis of problems due to cardiac rhythm dysfunctions and to heart pathologies in general, thanks to the creation of a mathematical "heart". The great descriptive capacity of mathematics actually makes it possible to tackle problems in the most varied application fields, such as for example the simulation of scenarios of relevant natural events (such as earthquakes or floods), the improvement of design in the industrial field, even the study of processes that warm the "hearts" of supporters, such as sports competitions. I will refer to this less conventional use of mathematics trying to highlight the founding elements that connect domains so apparently distant.

Bio

Alfio Quarteroni is Professor of Numerical Analysis at the Polytechnic University of Milan (Italy) and Emeritus Professor at the EPFL in Lausanne. According to Top Mathematics Scientists 2022, he ranked n.48 in the world, and n.1 in Italy among all mathematicians. He is founder and first director of MOX at the Politecnico di Milano (2002-2022) and founder and first director of MATHICS at EPFL (2010-2015). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences (Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei), the European Academy of Sciences, the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, the European Academy and the Italian Academy of Engineering and Technology.
