Luca Calatroni joins MaLGa with ERC-backed project MALIN!
From Pavia to Cambridge, Paris, Sophia-Antipolis and beyond, Luca Calatroni’s journey brings him to MaLGa Center at the University of Genoa, marking the center’s fourth ERC grant achievement. Luca, who joins the DIBRIS department, brings with him a wealth of experience in mathematical image processing and non-smooth optimization, having previously worked with prestigious institutions like École Polytechnique in France and CNRS’s I3S laboratory in Sophia-Antipolis. His journey began in applied mathematics, with a PhD from Cambridge, and has since evolved through a series of international fellowships and research projects, each deepening his focus on the modeling and optimization of imaging problems. Known for his collaborative spirit and dedication to interdisciplinary research, Luca’s work bridges fields as diverse as digital restoration of artworks and microscopy imaging.
Luca’s ERC Starting Grant project, MALIN, will pioneer new approaches for imaging inverse problems (IIPs) in fluorescence microscopy, promising robust solutions even with limited data and computational resources. This research grant, MaLGa’s fourth ERC-funded project, heralds the establishment of a new unit within the center called Computational Imaging & Learning (CIL), and opens exciting new career opportunities. In the coming weeks, MaLGa will announce calls for both PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, inviting motivated candidates to join this dynamic team and contribute to innovative intersections of mathematics, physics, and machine/deep learning. Stay tuned - MaLGa is ready to welcome new talent into its growing community!
